Ribbons and Badges
The CanSkate program consists of six levels. Within each level there are three elements to master before receiving a badge and moving to the next level. Each element passed earns a ribbon; the three elements for each level are balance, agility, and control. Once a skater has passed a level they will have earned three ribbons and a badge.
Powell River Skating Club's CanSkate program covers badges one through six. If your skater is interested in continuing on with the sport of figure skating, they have the option of joining our Jr StarSkate program once they've passed level four.
About CanSkate
CanSkate is Skate Canada’s learn-to-skate program. It is a dynamic program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate targets physical literacy and the fundamental skills that prepare skaters to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a fun recreational activity.
A complete series of balance, control, and agility skills are taught in six stages (levels) of learning. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and in developing them faster.
Proper Equipment
The right equipment can make or break your skater's time on the ice!
A CSA approved helmet is mandatory for all skaters participating in CanSkate. Your child will not be allowed on the ice without adequate head protection. Don't forget to check that your CSA approved helmet hasn't expired!
Proper, well fitting skates make a world of difference. We strongly recommend either standard hockey or figure skates. Molded boots or plastic boots do not allow for proper balance or gliding on the ice and will not give enough support for skaters wishing to continue with either hockey or figure skating.
Your child will get chilly without warm gear. We recommend a zipped up winter jacket and warm, waterproof gloves at the very least!
