CanSkate

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s official ‘learn-to-skate program’ that focuses on fun, participation and basic skating skill development. This program gives skaters a strong foundation for figure skating, hockey, speed skating, and ringette.

Certified coaches teach lessons in a group format, with support from trained Program Assistants. Skaters move at their own pace, with coaches using teaching aids, music, and a variety of activities to create an engaging and fun learning environment.

CanSkate uses a nationally-tested and proven curriculum to teach skaters balance, control, and agility skills in six stages (levels) of learning. Once a skater has passed a level they will have earned three ribbons and a badge.

Interested in figure skating? CanSkaters can join our Junior StarSkate program once they've passed level four.

What do you need to participate?

  • Proper, well-fitting skates (strongly recommend standard hockey or figure skates)
  • CSA-approved helmet that has not expired
  • Long pants or snow pants
  • Warm sweater or jacket
  • Gloves or mittens

Junior StarSkate

Junior StarSkate is the bridge program between CanSkate and StarSkate where skaters learn the basics of figure skating, including edges, turns, jumps, spins, and creative expression, in a group setting. This program is a pathway for skaters who have participated in CanSkate and wish to pursue figure skating further and move into the Star Program.

StarSkate

StarSkate teaches skaters the foundational figure skating skills needed to participate in singles, pairs, ice dance, and synchronized skating in a group and/or private lesson format. These foundational skills include jumps, spins, footwork, edges, dances, and artistic expression.

StarSkaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system and compete at invitational and inter-club competitions.

Adult Synchronized Skating

Synchronized Skating is a specialized discipline of figure skating involving eight or more skaters performing various group formations and maneuvers. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit executing circles, blocks, lines, wheels, and intersections in unison to music while demonstrating quality edges, power, and flow. Open to adults 18+.

Tween, Teen, and Adult

This learn-to-skate program allows tweens, teens, and adults to learn basic skating skills in a relaxed and recreational environment. This program is structured as a free skate, with small private and group lessons sprinkled throughout. The group will work on anything from forward gliding, backwards skating, stops and one foot glides, to cross overs, an intro to figure skating, and edges for an intro to power skating. Open for drop-in.

Advanced Skating Skills

Targeted to skaters in hockey or ringette, Advanced Skating Skills helps skaters improve overall skating skills with a focus on strength, power, and edge conditioning. This program is meant for skaters already comfortable on the ice and looking to refine their overall skating skills. Includes on-ice and dryland components.
