STARSkate

Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STAR Skate is all about!

STAR Skate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Assessments through a nationally standardized testing system.

The STAR Skate Program is meant to help skaters who have passed CanSkate Stage 6 (or equivalent) or who have a coach’s recommendation to further develop their figure skating skills.

Before registering in STARSkate for the first time, please consult our club coach or contact our club at powellriverskatingclub1@gmail.com to ensure you are choosing the appropriate program.

STARSkate Categories

Junior STARSkate

Junior StarSkate is PRSC’s bridge program between CanSkate and StarSkate where skaters learn the basics of figure skating, including edges, turns, jumps, spins, and creative expression, in a group setting. This program is a pathway for skaters who are participating in CanSkate and wish to pursue figure skating further while they complete their CanSkate levels, with the goal of moving into the StarSkate program.

STAR 1-5

Led by NCCP-certified Skate Canada coaches, the STAR 1-5 curriculum is Canada’s premier figure skating program. It lays the groundwork for future champions in singles, pairs, ice dance, and synchronized skating by introducing participants to all the figure skating essentials.

STAR 6-Gold

STAR 6-Gold is an assessment and event framework program designed for skaters who have completed the STAR 1-5 curriculum. It pushes your skills to the next level, building on what you’ve already learned while introducing exciting advanced figure skating elements.

Disciplines

Our figure skating program features the following pathways to develop your full potential:

Skills: A discipline for assessments that allows skaters to explore turns, steps, field moves and more. Skills is the foundation of all other disciplines.

Singles (Freeskate): Singles skating is where individual creativity shines through in the art of freeskate. It’s the most recognized form of our sport, showcasing personal style and athleticism on the ice.

Pairs: Two skaters join forces here to create a mesmerizing display of teamwork and skill. From lifts to throws, this discipline combines the beauty of technical ability and collaboration.

Ice Dance: Inspired by ballroom dancing, ice dance blends rhythm, athleticism, and elegance, allowing skaters to express themselves through captivating performances set to some of your favourite songs.

Synchronized: Synchronized skating, or “synchro,” is a dynamic team discipline where groups of eight or more skaters move as one, executing beautifully fluid circles, blocks, lines, wheels, and intersections to music. Synchro celebrates unity and teamwork on and off the ice.

Artistic: This discipline allows skaters to show their artistry through movement, creativity, projection, and musicality.

Competitions for STARSkate Athletes

StarSkate participants love to compete! Skate Canada offers several opportunities to do this. Our club generally attends two to three competitions a season.

STARSkate Interclub Competitions

These are events involving a number of clubs in the same region or area. The competition categories offered generally fall in line with the applicable Skate Canada Section specifications, so that all Interclubs within the Section are standardized (this allows Skate Canada Sections to offer a Section Final). The STARSkate Championship program provides opportunities for skaters who want to remain in the STARSkate program but also want to have the challenge of competing up to a Sectional level in a credible, nationally standardized event.

Invitational Competitions

These are events coordinated by a Section or Club(s) and are offered, generally, to STARSkaters and competitive skaters. Most events fall within Skate Canada’s specifications regarding program length and eligibility to compete.
